Machines and Decision Problems In automata theory, all inputs to a "program" are strings of characters, and all outputs are "true" or "false". A program "accepts" a string if it outputs "true", and "rejects" if it outputs "false". You can think of this as automata studying all pure functions of type f :: string -> boolean.
